Bound by hatred cora reilly7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() It was late April and today was the first warm day of the year. I’d stand by him and support him as best as I could, because he was mine and I was his. As long as Matteo treated me with care and respect, as long as he loved me, and I loved him, things would work out. But I’d realized I didn’t have to be happy about every aspect of his life. I’d never be okay with everything Matteo did, would never do even half of the things he had done and was going to do in the future. ![]() Smiling back, I turned the water on, and really let the words sink in, their truthfulness. Aria smiled as if I’d given her some huge present. I love him, the bad and the good,” I said firmly. I’d hated it, had fought it tooth and nail, but it was time to be brave. Matteo had held up a mirror to my face and showed me who I really was and where I belonged. ![]() I’d tried to become someone else, some kind of ideal I’d thought I needed to be, but that had never been me and never would. There was plenty of bad in Matteo, in every Made Man really, but I’d come to realize that there was in me as well. “Are you sure you can do the same? Accept all of him, even the bad?” Aria sank down on the edge of the bathtub. ![]()

These examples can teach the modern world, which suffers from some of the worst environmental degradation in history, how to navigate similar difficulties, restore the regional ecosystems, and escape the deadly fate of their ancestors. Societies often reached their greatest heights just before ecological catastrophe, causing mass starvation and collapse. Through detailed examples, Diamond shows how some civilizations, misunderstanding or ignoring the environmental warnings all around them, suffered catastrophic failure, while other peoples, similarly stressed, made wiser decisions and survived. Especially destructive is deforestation, which causes soil erosion, flooding, loss of wood products, and crop failures. Collapse discusses five major causes for the failure of cultures with degraded environments: human ecological impacts, changes in climate, hostile neighbors, friendly neighbors who back away, and a society’s unwillingness to adapt to changing circumstances. ![]() The golden lily by richelle mead7/5/2023 ![]() The assignment provides Sydney a way to redeem herself from previous disgrace due to helping a Dhampir who was falsely accused of murder, Rose Hathaway, who was also Lissa's best friend. This magic is so strong, Ellison believes, that it is sad that a person ever has to outgrow it. Reading “Jeffty Is Five” makes one believe that childhood, especially that brief time after a child develops a grasp of language and imagination but before that imagination is cornered by the demands of a disciplined schooling, is a time of magic. Ellison goes on to say that “Jeffty Is Five” “has become an image of reverence for the parts of my childhood that were joyous and free of pain.” Harlan Ellison writes in his introduction to this short story that “Jeffty Is Five” is one of his “half dozen favorite stories.” It is also an award-winning short story, having picked up both a Nebula Award in 1977, the year it was first published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and the Hugo Award in 1978. ![]() |
